CaptureTHE first UK spa to offer a special programme of treatments for cancer sufferers is using World Cancer Awareness Day to highlight its unique offerings.

The Spa at Ramside, at County Durham’s Ramside Hall Hotel, is the first in the country to join forces with American-based Wellness For Cancer, the world’s first accredited programme for the spa industry.

Staff across the spa have undergone specialist training to ensure that anyone dealing with cancer, or in remission, will have a positive experience.

And the spa is using World Cancer Awareness Day today (Feb 4) to showcase how important a sense of wellbeing is to those battling the disease.

The scheme at the hotel has already won the backing of nurses working for Macmillan Cancer Support, who have praised the knowledgeable staff and their ability to make those going through a difficult time feel at ease.

The Wellness For Cancer training involved all staff learning about the disease and the importance of bringing ‘mindfulness’ elements – a technique which helps people deal with anxiety by living in the moment – into play.

The therapists at Ramside have also undergone Wellness For Cancer’s training in massage and manicures and pedicures which have been created to ensure those suffering from the disease will feel relaxed and comfortable.

Jill Russell, Spa Director at Ramside, said she hoped World Cancer Awareness Day would help alert more people to what was available.

“We are hoping this day will flag up with those battling this disease that there is a programme available which can help them at this tough time,” she said.

“Our philosophy is to be able to provide wellness for all in a nurturing environment so that anyone going through cancer at any stage would be able to escape from their illness for a day.”

“We would never turn anyone away and we believe there will be some kind of treatment for everyone.”

The £8m Spa at Ramside offers five pools, including one of the UK’s biggest hydrotherapy pools, 14 treatment rooms, a thermal suite, a sleep retreat and a Rasul mud chamber.
