A small, country pub at the heart of one of Britain’s oldest villages is playing Santa Claus, with gifts for everyone who stays over Christmas.
The Derwent Arms, at historic Edmundbyers, on the border of County Durham and Northumberland, is open throughout the festive season for those wishing to enjoy exceptional food in the company of family and friends.
But those booking to stay over Christmas weekend, from Saturday 24 to Monday 26 December, will receive an extra treat – a luxurious present to open on Christmas Day.
The pub – which has six bedrooms and an apartment and is part of the Inn Hospitality Group portfolio – has teamed up with perfumier Notes of Northumberland to create bespoke hampers for Christmas weekend guests.
Along with the scented treats, those staying will enjoy breakfast both mornings, Christmas lunch with all the trimmings and a Christmas Day evening platter.
The pub is also open to non-residents on Christmas Day, when a four-course lunch will begin with canapés and sparkling wine before guests sit down to starters of spiced parsnip soup, duck liver parfait with plum chutney, king prawn and crayfish cocktail or grilled goat’s cheese with pickled beetroot.
A ‘boozy’ sorbet will come next, followed by a selection of mains including roasted sirloin of beef with Yorkshire pudding, traditional, stuffed roast turkey with pigs in blankets and duck fat roasties, pan-fried sea bass in a mussel cream sauce and butternut squash and sweet potato Wellington.
Desserts include crème brûlée, warm chocolate brownie, Christmas pudding and a selection of cheese and lunch will be rounded off with teas, coffee and sweet mince pies.
Renowned for superb food, the Derwent Arms, by the Derwent Reservoir, is also offering anyone who books their Christmas Day lunch before 25 November a gift voucher giving a 20 per cent discount on food between January and March 2023.
Christmas Day lunch costs £85 for adults and £50 for children while the Christmas Weekend two-night stay package costs from £500.
