The opportunity to give food, drink and a range of other goodies as a present is now on offer across Sunderland – thanks to a leading supermarket signing up for the city’s gift card scheme.

Morrisons at Seaburn has now joined around 200 businesses across the city which accept the Sunderland Gift Card – meaning that anyone lucky enough to receive a card can spend it in store.

Since its launch the card has gone from strength to strength, with businesses of all types and sizes recognising the worth of being involved and ensuring that people spend their money in the city.

Carl Stewart, store manager for Morrisons, said he decided to join the scheme “because it’s a simple way to support our neighbourhood and strengthen local spending.”

“By taking part, we’re helping to keep money within the community, encouraging people to shop locally, and making our store more accessible to customers who receive or use the card,” he said.

“It’s a positive step that benefits both our business and the wider area, and we’re proud to play our part in supporting local initiatives.”

Created by Sunderland’s BIDs – which include the City Centre BID and the Seafront BID where Morrisons is based – the aim is now to encourage both individuals and corporates to consider buying the cards for Christmas gifts.

Roberta Redecke, Head of Business Services at Sunderland’s BIDs, said she was delighted to have Morrisons on board.

“To have Morrisons recognise the importance of the Sunderland Gift Card scheme and its role in growing the local economy is fantastic,” she said.

“It means people who receive ahead of Christmas can use them to do their shopping or alternatively they’ll prove extremely useful in the new year when everyone is dealing with the aftermath of festive spending.”

The cards can be ordered online as a physical card or as an e-card which will be sent to Apple Pay or Google Pay and go directly to the recipient’s phone

They can also  be purchased in a variety of ways including in person at the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, Houghton Library, National Glass Centre and Washington Centre Library.

They can also be ordered as a physical card or as an e-card which will be sent to Apple Pay or Google Pay and go directly to the recipient’s phone.
