When you are sat at home on a Saturday morning waiting for your daughter to come round one of the last things you might expect is to get a phone call from a former Premiership referee to tell you that you had just won a Mercedes Benz in a charity raffle.
But that is exactly what happened when Claire Dunning of Thornaby picked up the phone last weekend; “It came out of the blue, completely unexpected, I couldn’t believe it,” she said.
Jeff Winter, who had called to tell of her good fortune said: “It went a bit quiet at first, then she said, ‘but I already have a car.’”
Well, now she has another – a 2003 registered Mercedes C Class C220 Cdi to be precise.
Claire is kindly donating the car to her daughter Jenny Jobling who was excited to come and pick up the car: “This will be fantastic as we currently only have one car that we have to juggle between the two of us,” she said.
The car was donated as a prize to be awarded in a raffle draw by Norton- based autism charity Daisy Chain by Bell Truck and Van. Glen Lang was on hand to pass over the keys. “This car was purchased for a sponsored fundraising event to drive from Newcastle to Monaco and back in four days.
The car never missed a beat and completed 2,620 miles, averaging 48.7 MPG across the trip. I’m sure Jenny will enjoy many happy miles of motoring in her new car.”
