Volunteers are being sought to help develop a community allotment in Newsham, Blyth.
The allotment on Beatrice Avenue is being rented as part of the Newsham Community Matters project from Blyth Town Council.
The plot is currently being cleared to be made ready for planting in the Autumn. Volunteers are being sought to help with jobs such as building fences, clearing the land and preparing the ground.
An allotment group has now been set up called “Allotment Matters” with the idea that whatever is grown in the plots will be used to benefit the community, such as using the produce in meals served at the Newsham Natters Lunch Club.
The Newsham Community Matters project was developed by the council earlier this year, after the council canvassed opinion in the community about what they would like to see developed.
With the help of a £26,000 grant from NE Procurement, weekly courses and activities were developed with the aim of improving the lives of people in the area.
The project focuses on four themes, IT Matters, such as help with job applications and benefit claims; Practical Matters, includes Craft Club and Newsham Natters Lunch Club, Family Matters where Health Trainers are available to discuss cooking on a budget and healthy lifestyle advice and Youth Matters in which the British Army engage with youths from the local area aged 11+. Courses are held weekly at the Church of Yahweh, St Bede’s Church Hall and The Pavilion in Newsham.
