WORK will begin in May on transforming a Sunderland city centre site into one of the North East’s top pan-Asian restaurants.

The green light has been given to the plans for The Muddler to occupy a unit at Keel Square and now the developers have confirmed that the fit out is due to begin.

The 150-seater restaurant and cocktail bar will open later this summer and will be a strong addition to the city’s fast-growing food and drink scene.

Known for its high-end take on Pan-Asian cuisine, creative cocktails, and luxe interiors, The Muddler has built a loyal following on Tyneside — and now it’s heading south to Wearside.

The new venue promises to bring the same moody glamour, sleek décor, and indulgent flavours that made its Grey Street location a go-to for foodies and cocktail connoisseurs alike.

The Muddler Sunderland is expected to feature a vibrant mix of sushi, bao, robata grills, and signature cocktails, all served in a stylish setting designed for both intimate dinners and lively nights out.

The development includes an outside seating area with parasols, plants and greenery to add to the atmosphere, which will accommodate up to 110 people.

Neill Winch, Chief Executive of Danieli Group which owns The Muddler brand, said he was delighted that the Sunderland scheme was now underway.

“Sunderland is a city on the rise, with exciting developments reshaping the city centre and breathing new life into the high street. We’re proud to be part of that transformation by bringing The Muddler to the heart of the city

“As a brand, The Muddler is all about quality, atmosphere, and experience — and we believe it will complement the bold, ambitious direction Sunderland is heading in.

“This opening represents more than just expansion; it’s about being part of a wider story of regeneration and helping to create vibrant, thriving places for people to enjoy.”

The Muddler in Sunderland, which has been designed by Collective Design, brings a stunning Asian inspired decor to the city’s hospitality scene.

The bar and restaurant features a striking combination of dark wood finishes and jade marble surfaces, creating a luxurious backdrop infused with Art Deco elegance.

Gold arches and bespoke artwork adorn the walls, while an extensive feature bar acts as a focal point beneath warm, ambient lighting. Every detail — from the beautifully crafted fixtures to the soft, atmospheric glow — has been carefully considered to deliver a timeless and immersive experience.

Cllr Kevin Johnston, portfolio holder for business, housing and regeneration at Sunderland City Council is also glad at the progress.

“It’s fantastic to see work get underway on the development of The Muddler,” he said.

“The city has welcomed a whole host of venues over the past couple of years, as the transformation of Riverside Sunderland continues at pace, and The Muddler will further strengthen the city’s food and drink offering.

“It will be yet another fantastic addition to the city’s offering and we can’t wait until it opens its doors.”
