Work is set to start on a £6.9m project at County Durham’s Selset Reservoir.
The investment, being made by Northumbrian Water, will add long-term resilience to the site’s ability to support water treatment for customers in Teesdale and beyond.
Earlier this year, work was carried out to establish elements of the site, ready for work to start in earnest following the nesting season, for up to 18 months.
The work will include renewing the site’s pipework and related infrastructure, enhancing the management of water flows that are passed forward for treatment at Lartington Water Treatment Works.
During the course of the work, a compound will be in place on the main car park, with visitors directed to alternative parking on site. Access across the dam will remain open for most of the work, although there may be times when temporary closures are required.
The work is being carried out by Northumbrian Water’s partner, Esh-Stantec.
Northumbrian Water’s Project Manager, Sophie Hudspeth, said: “This investment will help to ensure Selset Reservoir continues to serve our customers across Teesdale and the wider County Durham area for years to come. Selset Reservoir was constructed 65 years ago, and will be a part of the area’s water supply network for many more.
“Along with our other reservoirs, Selset is also a part of what draws many visitors to Teesdale to enjoy leisure time and take advantage of the welfare benefits of spending time in the great outdoors. We’re pleased that people will still be able to enjoy visits to Selset during this work, with access restrictions being kept to a minimum.”
