Essential bridge maintenance work to ensure continued safe and reliable journeys on the A1 in Gateshead will be completed this weekend.
Over the last few weeks Highways England has been carrying out work to Blaydon Haugh bridge on the northbound carriageway between Derwenthaugh (junction 73) and Scotswood (junction 74).
This work has been carried out overnight between 8pm and 6am, although there has been temporary road plate over the bridge itself and a reduced speed limit of 50mph to allow traffic to run over it during the day.
These now need to be removed and the A1 northbound will be closed from 8pm on Saturday 22 April until 6am on Monday 24 April to allow this to take place.
People planning to use the A1 this weekend are advised to plan their journeys and allow themselves extra time to get to their destinations.
Once these temporary road plates have been removed the speed limit will return to 70mph.
Clearly signed diversions will be in place during the closures.
