Sowerby households were among the first to receive Hambleton’s new recycling service today (Monday February 29).
And that meant local resident – and Leader of the District Council – Councillor Mark Robson, was able to witness it at first hand.
His new blue lidded wheelie bin packed with plastics, cans, aerosols, paper and cardboard was emptied by the authority’s crews into one of a fleet of five new state of the art trucks bought for the new scheme.
The authority has provided most homes with a new bin to enable residents to recycle more at the kerbside than ever before – the bin can take extra plastics, cardboard, paper, foil, cartons, cans and aerosols. Glass continues to be collected in the current blue box. Collection dates do not change.
“We hope that these improvements will see household recycling and composting rates hit 53% by 2020 – making the authority the top performer in North Yorkshire and 3% above the national target,” said Councillor Robson.
“And if my bin is anything to go by we are going to hit our targets very quickly!”
Deliveries of the new bins – and a leaflet explaining the new system – have taken place over the last month. Anyone who still hasn’t received one should contact the council on 01609 779977.
This week’s collections are for those households whose recycling is collected on black bin week. They start next week (March 7) for those that leave their kerbside recycling out on green bin week collections. All bins must be at the kerbside by 6am on the morning of collection.
