GATESHEAD-based Craigielea Community Nursing Home has received a substantial investment to renovate its garden, improving its look and accessibility to residents.

The transformation has seen the installation of two pathways, creating welcoming routes where residents can enjoy walks, as well as new block pathing to form a patio area with outdoor seating, leading out from the care home’s café.

Access to the new-look garden can now also be gained from the lounge, making spending time in the fresh air more achievable for residents.

Further visually-pleasing additions include a water feature, taking the garden’s total to two, plush grassy areas, as well as a varied range of colourful plants and flowers.

To celebrate the garden’s completion, residents’ families, friends of the care home, stakeholders and members of the local community were invited to a special garden party, where they enjoyed a BBQ from the staff at Italian restaurant Fratello’s Jesmond, entertainment including a pianist and a singer, as well as a raffle, tombola, and fun games for everyone to join in with.

The investment is the first in a series planned across Solehawk Ltd’s portfolio, the care home’s operator.

Thomas Varghese, director for care homes at Solehawk Ltd, said: “Our residents’ quality of life is of the highest importance to us and our investment into Craigielea’s garden shows our commitment to this, enhancing the outdoor space for residents – whether they enjoy going for a short stroll or simply relaxing in the new patio area, taking in the sights of the surrounding plants and flowers.

“It was great to see the smiles on residents’ faces when the finished product was revealed at our garden party and we hope that access to the improved garden continues to do this.”
