THE annual Elgee Memorial Lecture takes place at the Dorman Museum on Saturday, December 5 from 10am.
This year’s subject is ‘The Rise and Fall of the Late Iron Age Royal Centre at Stanwick’ by Colin Haselgrove, Professor of Archaeology at the University of Leicester.
Prof Haselgrove will give an illustrated talk about the enormous earthwork complex near Darlington, the largest continuous prehistoric fortification in Britain and comparable to some of the most important settlements in continental Europe.
As well as illuminating the social and political dynamics of the period, research and excavation has cast new light on the everyday lives of the Iron Age inhabitants of the Tees Valley and their ritual and mortuary practices.
The annual Elgee memorial lectures have run since 1968 in memory of archaeologist, geologist and naturalist Dr Frank Elgee who was curator of the Dorman Museum from 1904 to 1944.
