Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Screen Shot 2015-12-18 at 15.23.20The cream of an academy’s talent in music, dance and drama took to the stage for an end of term festive showcase.

Students from The King’s Academy put their nerves to one side to perform in front of more than 200 pupils in Year 7 and a panel of judges.

The annual performing arts festival gives acts from across the academy the chance to show off their talents with the points they are awarded contributing to house totals for the chance to lift the house cup next summer.

Duo Francois Kalambo and Tom Sutton got the judges’ vote with their acoustic version of rapper Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise to win the competition and contribute to a first place for Greeks house.

The student audience also got a chance to give their preference, picking dancer Eden O’Donnell as their winner followed by runner-up drummer Daniel Gamble who pipped Francois and Tom into third place.

Among the other top acts were visually impaired pianist Ethan Cramer, who has learned the instrument purely through hearing, and Coleena Collins, who sang and played guitar to Taylor Swift’s hit We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.

Head of performing arts and competition judge Danielle Dodsworth said: “The range of acts and different styles of performance show what fantastic diversity we have among the talent at The King’s.

“It’s not easy to perform in front of your peers and the students did an amazing job. The audience seemed to thoroughly enjoy it and supported the acts really well.”
