Prudhoe youngsters are being encouraged to wise up to a healthier lifestyle thanks to Karbon Homes.

The newly-established housing provider has awarded Prudhoe Community Workshop Trust £5,000 to support a new project, Wise-up 2 Wellbeing @ The East.

Delivered in partnership with Northumberland County Council’s youth service, the project will run on Monday and Wednesday evenings at the East Centre on Front Street.

It will offer general health advice, as well as information about healthy eating and sexual health, plus sessions on life skills – from learning how to budget to staying safe online.

Young people looking for work will also get the chance to take accredited food hygiene and first aid courses to boost their employment prospects and there’ll be advice on writing CVs and help with job searches and job applications.

Karbon Homes is the largest social landlord in Prudhoe with nearly 1,000 properties in the area – over 430 of them on the West Wylam estate.

Karbon Homes’ community involvement officer, John Temple, said: “We were keen to support a project that would help our communities in Prudhoe, particularly teenagers and young adults in the area, and Wise-up 2 Wellbeing really fitted the bill.

“All the elements in this project are geared to improving the life chances of young people, whether that’s supporting them in finding a job, or helping them steer clear of cyber bullies.

“The programme tackles the topics that are issues of concern to them and it does it in a way that takes into account what they want to get out of the project.”

Prudhoe’s East Centre runs both junior and senior youth clubs, as well as daytime drop-in sessions and a MotorZ project that promotes responsible driving and vehicle maintenance among young drivers. An outreach service also operates from the centre on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings.

Wise-up 2 Wellbeing @ The East will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings between 6.30pm and 9pm.
