Redcar & Cleveland College has received a silver award from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).

The Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) award, now in its second year, aims to recognise and reward outstanding teaching and learning, and assesses Higher Education institutions based on feedback from staff and students.

Achieving a Silver Award, Redcar & Cleveland College has proven that its student retention levels are excellent, and that progression is readily available to those who choose to pursue it.

The TEF Panel outlined several examples of good practice displayed by the college, including the dedicated Higher Education Centre, use of peer observation groups known as ‘Teaching Circles’, support for disabled students and delivery of continued professional development.

Trevor Watson, higher education manager at Redcar & Cleveland College, said: “We pride ourselves on the quality of our teaching, and we are thrilled that this has been acknowledged by HEFCE.

“What has been even more rewarding is the feedback which we have received from our current students – 94 per cent of whom have stated that they receive good quality teaching on their course.

“Over 90 per cent of students have also commented that the teaching being delivered will help them to develop the skills needed to get a job in their chosen field.”

The Teaching Excellence Framework is open to all higher education institutions but strict criteria relating to national student survey statistics and student progression into employment or additional higher education must be met.

Redcar & Cleveland College’s silver accreditation will be held until June 2020.
