Do you know an everyday hero in Peterlee?
In a project headed up by Inspector Lee Blakelock, Peterlee Police have this week launched the ‘Pride of Peterlee’ award, and they’re looking for you to put forward your nominations.
Aimed at highlighting the positive contributions young people are making in their community, the project hopes to break a negative stereotype by putting the spotlight on big achievements and random acts of kindness.
Inspector Blakelock, who will be judging the award, said: “There are young people in our community who commit low-level crime and anti-social behaviour, but to tar them all with the same brush would be unfair.
“Within the Police service, we see both sides, and we know that the ‘good’ far outstrips the ‘not-so-good’. We want to highlight this with the ‘Pride of Peterlee’ award.”
This month’s award has been presented to Chloe Pinkney and Emmie Steel, who were nominated by members of the community for their part in assisting a lady who had suffered a nasty fall in Peterlee Bus Station.
Inspector Blakelock said: “We are incredibly proud of their actions on that day. They are a credit to their parents, themselves, and to Peterlee.”
The monthly award is open to nominations from the public via private messages on the Peterlee Police Facebook page. Nominations can come from a parent/guardian, a teacher, or even a passer-by.
Criteria for nominations are:
- The nominee must be below the age of 18.
- The nominee must be within the Peterlee Police area, which includes Trimdon, Wingate, Wheatley Hill, Thornley, Shotton, Peterlee, Blackhall and Horden.
- The nominee must have made a spontaneous act of kindness.
- Nominations can only be accepted via Peterlee Police private message.
Recipients of the award will receive a certificate, medal and voucher.
After 12 months, the Chief Constable Mike Barton and PCVC Ron Hogg will judge the winner of the annual ‘Pride of Peterlee’ award, who will receive a trophy and a personal tour of the Police Headquarters – and perhaps a visit from the Durham Interceptors!
