Working with contractor Balfour Beatty and consultant Atkins, Stockton Council scooped project of the year in the Medium Projects Category for the Thornaby Footbridge project.

The £1.1 million project, which was funded by Network Rail, Stockton Council and Tees Valley Unlimited, saw a new bridge with an “innovative design” built to help people access the station and provide an important link between north Thornaby and Old Thornaby.  ICE judges praised the “impressive project” and said the scheme was “delivered safely, on time and under budget.”

Stockton Council’s work to improve the public realm in Yarm was also commended in the Small Projects Category. Last year the Council invested £500,000 in Yarm High Street which saw paving around the Town Hall replaced with Yorkshire stone to make it easier for people to get to the Town Hall, disabled toilet and war memorial. Heritage style street lighting as well as lighting to illuminate the Town Hall was also installed. The Council and contractors Balfour Beatty were praised for achieving a “high quality finish within extremely tight timescale in a busy central location.”

Richard McGuckin, Stockton Council’s Head of Economic Growth and Development, said: “It is vital we continue to improve and upgrade the Borough’s infrastructure so it is always satisfying to receive recognition from prominent industry bodies such as ICE.

“We worked closely with a range of partners and contractors to complete these projects which were highly praised by the judges. We strive to deliver first class projects to make the Borough a better place to live, work and visit.”
