Canvassers working to update the electoral register will be visiting homes across County Durham over the coming weeks.
Durham County Council is in the final phase of its annual review of the register. This involves visiting all properties which have not responded to written requests to update their details.
It is important that residents do respond even if the information contained on the register has not changed.
Residents need to confirm or amend their details as soon as possible if they wish to be included on the 2016 electoral register.
People who are not listed on the register will not be able to vote in local and national elections, including parish, county council and general elections.
They also need to be included on the register in order to vote in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections in May 2016 and the referendum on membership of the European Union, which is expected to take place before the end of 2017.
Being registered to vote can also improve your credit rating.
Canvassers, who wear ID badges that are visible at all times, can help members of the public complete their registration forms.
