THERE’S still time to enter this year’s Active Sunderland BIG Walk the event that sees hundreds of walkers putting their best foot forward across the city.
More than 300 people have already signed up for this year’s BIG Walk on Sunday 20 September 2015 and there are places still available on the two fantastic routes. Both routes start at the landmark National Glass Centre, the 6.5 mile walk goes on to finish at Washington Wetlands Centre and for the little more adventurous the 11.5 mile walk finishes at Herrington Country Park.
Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health, Wellness and Culture said: “The BIG Walk continues to be a very popular event which is easily accessible to so many people. I think it is the perfect event to raise money for a chosen cause.”
Many walkers have sponsors and are helping to raise money for charity or their favourite good cause. In addition to this for every entry received a £1 donation will be made towards this year’s Mayoral charities, the North East Disability Resource Centre, Sunderland Armed Forces Network and Sunderland MIND.
Cllr Kelly added: “It is great to have something such as this for all the family. It is such a great opportunity to help others and I encourage everyone to come along and take part in this fantastic day. ”
After completing the BIG Walk all walkers receive a medal and a goody bag and a free shuttle bus service will take walkers back from both finishing venues to the car parks at the National Glass Centre.
On-line entries are being accepted until Wednesday 16 September. For an application form please visit www.activesunderland.org.uk. Alternatively application forms are available at any leisure centre or library.
