Blasts from the past: Reformed bands from the 80s and 90s

The music industry has a long history of bands breaking up, reforming and reuniting often with missed results. Is it better to have a good memory of your favourite band in their Heyday or are they even better when they come back together for either a new tour or even a new album? What about those bands whose chemistry was so explosive that when the members parted ways a reunion was thought to have been impossible. Here are some reunited bands from the 80s and 90s that may be surprising.

Guns n Roses

Those were the words famously spoken by William “Axl Rose” Bailey when asked in 2012 if he had plans to do a reunion tour with the original line-up in the future. Hailing from Los Angeles, Guns ‘n’ Roses Rose to fame in the late 80s and took the Hard Rock world by storm. By 1994 after several tours and worldwide success various band members came and went with only Axl remaining a constant at the helm.

In December 2015 Slash re-joined the band amidst announcements of a reunited Guns ‘n’ Roses leading to the Not In This Lifetime tour which is still going strong with dates already booked for 2018. Album sales and Merchandising are going strong as the Guns’ web-store continues to sell classic items such as clothing, dolls, drink-ware and even Christmas decorations. Is not only on their store that they have made their presence made online as there is even a Guns ‘n’ Roses slot that plays classics such as Welcome To The Jungle, Sweet Child O’ Mine and Paradise City. Be sure not to miss this classic line up at Download  Festival in 2018.

The Cranberries

Formed in 1989 these Irish rockers broke onto the scene with their 1993 album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We. It wasn’t until they toured in support of Suede that they caught the attention of MTV. 2004-2008 saw the band members take a break and work on solo projects and they reunited in 2009 as a celebration of Delores O’Riordan becoming an honorary patron of Trinity College’s University Philosophical Society. May 2017 saw the release of their latest album Something Else. Unfortunately, the subsequent tour has been cancelled due to Delores O’Riordan’s ongoing ill-health. Let’s hope Delores makes a full recovery so the band can bring us more anthemic gems like Zombie.

Aqua

Love them or Hate them, Aqua are another band from the 90s that also reformed – for a second time – in 2016, this time to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their hit Barbie Girl. They have been performing as part of the “We Love the 90s” music festival in Denmark. Despite their worldwide success, the band hasn’t yet released any new music. Though could a sequel to Barbie Girl be waiting for us in the future? Despite still performing regularly on the festival circuit they are still largely forgotten in the rest of the world and no new official merchandise for the band is available.

Are bands reuniting affecting fashion trends?

There is no doubt that the 80s and 90s have been very influential in the music world and that even today’s fashion is currently influenced by that era. For example, just look at skinny jeans. Is the music industry being influenced by fashion or is it the other way around and is it influencing fashion? As we have seen. There are many reasons for bands to reunite and sometimes it can be truly magical seeing our heroes back on the stage stronger than ever before, playing the songs that we have grown to love or even writing new songs. At the end of the day, as long as you enjoy the music does fashion really matter?
