STOCKTON-ON-TEES Borough Council is calling on residents to help explore and record the fascinating history of Stockton High Street.
The Council’s ‘Stories from the High Street’ project offers a series of free workshops where participants will be able to share and research the real life stories about the many historic Town Centre buildings and the generations who visited, worked and lived in them throughout the years.
The first workshop will take place at 10.30am to noon in Stockton Central Library on Wednesday, 24 February.
The stories will be showcased together at a celebratory heritage event on 11 May as part of Local History Month.
Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Councillor Bob Cook, said: “Stockton has a very rich heritage so it is really important that we preserve it for many more generations.
“Throughout the ‘Stories from the High Street’ project you will have the opportunity to explore all kinds of interesting artefacts such as documents, engravings, photographs, records and more that help to piece together the lives of the people and properties that were such a big part of the High Street. I would urge everyone to come along and take part.”
The project is the latest in Stockton to benefit from the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Townscape Heritage Initiative, which is being delivered via the Council’s ‘Grants for Heritage Buildings’ scheme.
