A NORTH East college is throwing open its doors to provide a public glimpse of 21st century education.
Sunderland College is hosting an open day to show off its new city campus building to the public on Saturday, December 3. Anyone can take the time to explore the new campus, which is a state-of-the-art learning environment for vocational students in the city.
The campus opened in September, and is home to more than 2,000 students from not only Sunderland but right across the North East. Students who study there learn in a modern environment about subjects including catering and hospitality, hair and beauty and manufacturing and engineering.
The City Showcase event gives visitors the chance to receive a guided tour of the space and even try out some of the facilities through a range of activities including pizza throwing, painting and decorating, hair and make-up and plumbing. The event is free to attend.
Ellen Thinnesen, chief executive and principal of Sunderland College said: “City Campus is not only a fantastic asset for the college but for the entire city of Sunderland.
“We are keen to show people in Sunderland some of the fantastic facilities they have on their doorstep, and hopefully inspire more of them to come and gain a first-class education with us at the college.”
The college will soon open parts of its facility to the public, including its restaurant, salon, spa and barbers.
Ellen added: “We have some exceptionally talented young people who are gaining skills that they will need to successfully work either for themselves or for businesses across the North East in the future.
“Gaining the skills they will need in work is something we are committed to supporting them to achieve. By not only opening our doors as a one-off, but also giving the students the chance to sell some of their goods in the future, we are creating an opportunity for them to gain more rounded-skills that will serve them brilliantly when they enter the world of work.”
The campus will throw open its doors between 10am and 2pm at the event, and people need not pre-book. City campus is located metres away from the Park Lane Interchange and it is a £29million new development that replaced the college’s old Hylton Campus, in Southwick.
“We are extremely proud to invite the public along to this event, as the college aims to be at the heart of the community, delivering the skills that the city and wider region will need for long into the future. We hope people will join us for what should be a great day for people of all ages,” added Ellen.
