The Cuthbert Avenue scheme, which comprises ten two bedroom and six three bedroom semi-detached and terraced properties, will help address a need for more family accommodation within the estate which has been identified as a primary development area by Four Housing.  The properties have been designed to complement the surrounding dwellings.

Able Construction (Northern) Ltd has been appointed to build the scheme which is currently on track for completion by the end of February 2017.  The Gateshead headquartered construction firm has partnered with Four Housing for over 15 years and recently completed a development at Mary’s Place in Millway, Gateshead.

The construction contract will provide work experience opportunities for a number of young people, will safeguard a number of apprenticeships and will also provide health and safety training and vocational qualifications for a number of employees.

The Sherburn Road development has been supported by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) which has contributed £400,000 of funding

Philippa Hughes, head of business development at Four Housing, said: “We are pleased that work is underway on the new family homes on the Sherburn Road Estate.  The scheme represents a significant investment to the area that has been part funded by the Homes and Communities Agency.

“Not only will the development provide high quality, affordable housing options for families in an area where there is high demand, it will reinvigorate an area of the community which has been derelict for some time.  The homes will complement the profile of our 5,000 existing homes across the North East which provide a range of housing options for people in housing need.

“We are pleased to be partnering with Able Construction (Northern) Limited once again and to see the wider employment and training opportunities that have been presented as a result of the scheme.”

Peter Fowle, Managing Director at Able Construction (Northern) Limited, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded this contract and look forward to working with Four Housing Group once again.

“We have built a strong and successful relationship with Four Housing Group over a number of years and this new contract provides us with the opportunity to continue our partnership, provide new homes to a very high standard and also provide employment for our workforce.”
