Food waste recycling company Warrens Group is lobbying local authorities in the North East to support the region in becoming leaders of household food recycling.
The landmark Environmental Bill is set to mandate household food recycling by 2023. Warrens Group is working to ensure that North East councils are at the forefront of implementing the service and making strides towards the UK’s 2050 net zero goal.
By starting conversations with environment directors from all 12 North East councils, Warrens are advising on how the service can be established, to make sure the region is prepared when the changes come into action in 2023.
Kevin Quigley, commercial director at Warrens Group, has written to councils asking them to prepare the North East for this change.
The move to make household food waste recycling compulsory is one that will come with no financial or logistical support from the UK Government. For councils, thorough planning is needed to avoid unnecessary delays when the date comes around.
Kevin believes that food waste recycling is one of the easiest ways to combat the climate crisis. He said: “I’m in full support of the Environmental Bill. Once all households are recycling their food, they’ll see how much their spending can be reduced, having a huge impact on their finances and carbon footprint.
“What we are trying to achieve by working with local authorities in the North East as early as possible, is making sure that they are ready for the change and have an efficient and effective food waste collection service in place.”
The change will see the UK move towards a more sustainable future. Currently the UK household food waste is responsible for 14 million tonnes of CO2 alone – as much greenhouse gas produced as flying from London to Perth more than 4.5 million times.
Warrens currently provides food waste collection services for businesses and schools across the region. Warrens is transitioning towards biomethane fueling and hope to have the entire fleet converted by 2023 when all transport formats have been launched and available in the HGV fleet transport market.
