GIANT, moving dinosaur fossils, sea shanties and an interactive circus have been added to the already packed programme for this year’s This Is South Tyneside Festival.
Along with the ever-popular Summer Parade, Proms in the Park event and the four spectacular free Sunday Concerts running at Bents Park in July, organisers at South Tyneside Council have revealed details of stunning new street theatre and live performances.
This afternoon of family friendly entertainment will take place on Sunday 3 July at Sandhaven Promenade, making the parade weekend and seafront events even bigger and better.
The event, which has been supported by Arts Council England, will take place between 12noon and 3pm, ahead of Proms in the Park, and will include Jurassic Live! created by North East based The Living Fossil Company, which will bring to life a number of dinosaur skeleton puppets.
Measuring between eight and a staggering 20 feet tall, audiences will come face to face with two terrifying velociraptors and the king of the dinosaurs – a giant T Rex.
Also appearing will be circus performers, Five Ring Circus, which create fully interactive events allowing the audience to get fully involved.
And rounding off the day will be the Old Time Sailors, a musical event which will take the audience back to the 19th century with the opportunity to join in some much loved sea shanties.
The exciting addition to the three month long free festival will give families across the borough and beyond the opportunity to enjoy a great day out.
Councillor Joan Atkinson, Deputy Leader of South Tyneside Council, with responsibility for Culture, Leisure and the Visitor Economy, said the new event was a great opportunity for people to visit Sandhaven promenade and also see some North East talent.
“We have put together what is a very varied, exciting and fun programme of events with something for everybody to enjoy,” she said.
“It’s also great to be able to showcase North East performers and highlight the wealth of great talent we have here in the region.
“We are very grateful for the support of Arts Council England in helping us to stage these new arts and cultural experiences this summer and we are sure that they will be a very popular addition to the wider festival programme.”
