Dog owners offered health check for their pooches

Redcar_and_Cleveland_Borough_CouncilREDCAR and Cleveland is set to take the lead in promoting responsible dog ownership by hosting eight pet community roadshows throughout 2016.

Dogs Trust, in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, is delivering the roadshows throughout the borough which will provide basic health checks and advice, microchip checks and free dog bags.

The first roadshow will be taking place on Monday, March 14 at Emmanuel Church in Saltburn between 11am and 3pm.

The trust will be highlighting to residents that compulsory microchipping is becoming law in England, Wales and Scotland on Wednesday, April 6. This means it will be a legal requirement for owners to ensure their dog is microchipped by this date and the details on the microchip are kept up to date.

The trust will also be contacting local vets before each roadshow for offers and deals in order to raise awareness around affordable pet healthcare available locally.

Council officers will be in attendance to promote the council’s dog warden service and its hard-hitting “pick up the poo” campaign which aims to tackle dog fouling in the borough.

Cllr Helen McLuckie, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods at Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council said:

“I am delighted we are teaming up with Dogs Trust in helping promote responsible dog ownership in Redcar and Cleveland, and these community roadshows will be a great tool to reach out to pet owners.

“Raising awareness of the issues surrounding dog fouling, affordable pet healthcare and microchipping all contribute to keeping our neighbourhoods clean and the pets in our borough safe and happy.”

The community roadshows will be taking place throughout the year until October, and more information can be found on the council’s homepage: www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk
