Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Doreen’s success confirms, if you’re in it, you might just win it!

A LONG time hospice supporter has been rewarded with a roll over win after backing a charity lottery for more than 20 years.

Doreen Duguid has become the first ever roll over winner of the One Wish Lottery two decades after it began to support St Teresa’s Hospice Darlington, the Butterwick Bishop Auckland, St Benedict’s Sunderland and St Cuthbert’s Durham.

The generous natured pensioner, of Darlington, celebrated her win by donating £2,000 of her £10,000 windfall back to St Teresa’s Hospice, which provides care for patients and their families from the borough, South Durham and North Yorkshire.

The remainder she is currently planning how to spend with her three children and two grandchildren.

Proceeds from the One Wish Lottery are divided equally between the four local hospices with most regular supporters buying their unique number with a monthly direct debit. Every week one lucky winner claims £1,000 but the roll over gains pace at the rate of £200 a week until a maximum prize of £10,000 is reached. So far the lottery has raised close to £7m.

One Wish Lottery manager Dawn Watson said: “Mrs Duguid started supporting our lottery just after it was launched 20 years ago so it is fitting that she becomes the first ever winner of a roll over, which began only last year.”

Mrs Duguid added: “It was such a shock when they rang to tell me. The most I’d ever won previously was a fiver once. I lost my husband Peter two months ago, suddenly at home, and I know St Teresa’s does such a marvellous job, which is why I wanted to donate a fifth of my winnings back.”

Head of care at St Teresa’s Hospice Alison Marshall said: “People like Mrs Duguid give to us every week through the lottery which is fantastic and vital for us to continue our work.

“Our hospice alone needs £3m a year to operate and in the current economic climate funds are becoming increasingly difficult to secure. There are so many charities and so many lotteries which is why we are so incredibly grateful to her for giving us such a sizable portion of her winnings.”
