Emeli Sandé: University Chancellor’s thanks to pandemic key workers

Multi-platinum selling singer and University of Sunderland Chancellor Emeli Sandé has sent a special message of thanks to key workers.

The songwriter, who became the University’s Chancellor last year, sent her personal thanks via the University to NHS and social care staff on the frontline.

Emeli said: “We appreciate everything key workers are doing for our loved ones and those working hard to keep us all safe.”

The songwriter’s parents met while studying at the then Sunderland Polytechnic, and her birth in 1987 coincided with their graduation ceremony – so they could not attend.

On becoming Chancellor last year, Emeli presented her mum and dad with their graduation certificates during the University’s 2019 Academic Awards.

Emeli wrote her first song at the age of 11 but was thrust into the spotlight in 2012 when her debut album, Our Version of Events, spent 10 weeks at number one and broke a chart record set by The Beatles.
