A young woman who turned a sports injury into a career opportunity has taken the next step up the ladder with RMT Accountants & Business Advisors.
Emily Thompson is now taking appointments as an insolvency practitioner at the Gosforth-based firm’s recovery and insolvency team, where she is responsible for working with struggling businesses to find the best possible outcomes for their owners, employees and creditors.
In 2004, Emily was two thirds of the way through a business finance and economics degree course at Loughborough University when a serious rugby injury forced her to take a year-long break from her studies.
During her year out, she took on a work experience placement with RMT’s insolvency team, and they were so impressed with her work that she was offered a permanent position with the firm, which she accepted.
Over the last 11 years, Emily, who is originally from Boldon, has developed her insolvency industry expertise, qualifying first for her Certificate of Proficiency in Insolvency (CPI) in 2010 before going on to qualify for her Insolvency Practitioner’s Licence four years later.
She has also widened her commercial knowledge by taking a management diploma at Northumbria University, and has worked with many different types of businesses across an extensive range of industry sectors.
Emily Thompson says: “When I joined RMT for my work placement, I didn’t have a detailed knowledge of the recovery and insolvency sector, but I quickly found that I enjoyed the work and seemed to have an aptitude for it. When the chance came to join the team permanently, it seemed the right thing to do – and 11 years on, it clearly was!
“Our team is very close-knit and supportive, and the commercial and financial expertise that we can tap into across the whole practice adds a wealth of knowledge and experience to the services we provide.
“We’ve had a busy start to the year, and it’s exciting to be taking on the additional responsibilities that come with my new role.”
Mike Pott, managing director at RMT, adds: “Emily has shown a great deal of determination, application and skill to forge herself a successful career in a very specialist area of accountancy, and her promotion reflects the value that we place on her and the work she does.”
RMT provides the full range of financial and business advisory services through its accountancy, specialist tax, medical and healthcare, corporate finance and recovery & insolvency teams, and works with firms of all sizes both within and outside the North East.
