Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Events for carers

A series of events are being held next week in South Tyneside for people who spend their lives caring for others.

To mark Carers Week, South Tyneside Council and its partners have organised a range of events to both support and reward carers.

On Wednesday, 8 June a carers information event will be held at Hedworth Hall in Dean Road, South Shields, between 12 noon and 4pm. Open to all carers in South Tyneside, this drop-in event featuring stalls and speakers from South Tyneside Council and South Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group, will also include a buffet lunch and refreshments. Anyone wishing to attend is advised to book a place by calling 0191 4244191.

On Thursday, 9 June the North East Council on Addictions is organising a gardening and creative event at Greenhope Oasis Community Allotment at Brockley Avenue, South Shields. Carers will be able to find out what goes on in their garden and try their hand at some creative activities. Complementary therapy tasters will also be on offer, and the Recovery choir will give a performance at this event which runs from 1pm – 3pm.

Special drop-in sessions are also being organised by TEN – the local charity which works with unemployed people to raise their employment prospects. On Thursday, 9 June, a Young Carers Open Day will be held at their base in Units 9 and 10 Waverley, Market Dock, South Shields between 9am and 12 noon. Young carers will be able to learn more about Talent Match – a Big Lottery funded programme which supports 18 – 24-year-olds who have been unemployed for 12 months or more.

A series of drop-in sessions are also being at held at all secondary schools across the Borough where young carers will be given a plaque in recognition of the work they do.

Lead Member for Independence and Wellbeing, Councillor Tracey Dixon, said: “Caring for loved ones can be challenging, so it is only right that we recognise the very valuable contribution carers make to their families and communities.

“It is also essential that we make sure they know where to turn to for help and support when they need it.”
