Rio Paralympics hero Laurence Whiteley cut the red ribbon to officially open the
Northallerton department store’s newly extended designer womenswear collection.
Four dancers from North Leeds Dance Academy – Ping Liem and his partner Roxanne
Youman and Ivan Silva Llamas and partner Hayley Davies – performed the Cha-Cha,
Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble and Jive in the department store.
Ping and Roxanne are both professional dancers and Latin Dance champions, while
Ivan and Hayley are also champions and dance on the international circuit.
A red carpet, stretching from the front door through the store to the first-floor
women’s designer department greeted customers, who enjoyed a glass of fizz and
canapes in The Bistro, before a fashion show featuring clothes and accessories from
Barkers’ autumn/winter 2016 collection.
Laurence, who won a gold medal in Rio in the mixed double scull with partner Lauren
Rowles, opened the new designer womenswear department.
Barkers staff took part in a fashion show to show off this season’s must-haves from
labels like Armani, Joseph Ribkoff and Ralph Lauren.
Barkers womenswear buyer Jane Hunter said: “Everyone loves Strictly Come
Dancing, so we thought it would be great to bring that kind of ballroom glamour to
our fashion department.
“There was a terrific turnout of customers through the afternoon and evening. The
dancers put on a wonderful show and everyone enjoyed the fashion show.”
Lucky customers bagged more than £1,000 worth of prizes, including shopping
vouchers, perfume, designer gift bags and makeovers.
