What we leave behind is important.
It affects what people think of us, our reputation, and it can have a huge impact on everything we go on to do or achieve from that point.
Applying this way of thinking to a business or an organisation forces them to look inwards at themselves and how they operate.
Once upon a time, it was enough just to fix a hole, repair a burst or carry out a maintenance project.
Now, that’s just the starting point, the minimum. All kinds of organisations are striving to bring value to communities and leave a positive legacy wherever they work.
This summer, construction partners Esh-Stantec, Interserve, IWS, MMB and Wood and will join Northumbrian Water and innovators to look at ways that legacy can be incorporated into everyday business by these big companies.
They’ll spend five days at the water company’s Innovation Festival in July, learning, innovating and coming up with options for developing good community relations and enhancing the environment through the work that they do.
Northumbrian Water’s Asset Investment Manager, Richard Seales, said: “Understanding the impact we can have on wider social, economic and environmental factors, is just as important as the work itself.
“We invest some £250 million every year in our assets and we are committed to making a positive difference as we do this. We want to support the local economy, get involved in community projects and inspire young people, leaving a long-lasting, positive legacy in the areas where we operate.
“The Innovation Festival is a fantastic opportunity to bring together our construction partners, along with some really creative thinkers, and work together to explore how we can ensure we’re building valuable legacies for future generations through the work we do.”
The Northumbrian Water Innovation Festival 2019 takes place at Newcastle Racecourse between 8 to 12 July.
More than 3,000 people from around the world, including industry experts, engineers, students and customers, are expected at the festival, where they will search for solutions to major societal and environmental challenges.
