The Labour Leader took time out from a visit to the North East to talk to the former South Shields miners who are campaigning to defend his leadership amid an attempted coup by members of the Parliamentary Labour Party to oust him.

A public meeting to support Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership campaign will take place at Harton and Westoe Miners Welfare in Low Lane, South Shields (NE34 0NA) on Wednesday, August 3, at 7pm.

John Watson, secretary of the banner group, said: “Jeremy was fantastic. He spoke about how the trade unions and the Labour Party must be united to defeat the Tories and their attacks on working class people.”

Mr Watson, 62, a former miner, who worked at Westoe pit for 23 years, said: “It’s wonderful to have a leader of the Labour Party who is so honest and prepared to defend his principles. We have to fight back against austerity.”

He added: “People want transparency and a leader with integrity, something that has been lacking in British politics for a long time.

“Jeremy won 60 per cent of the vote to become leader of the party, and he’ll win an even greater percentage this time round.

Places for the meeting on Wednesday are limited to 100, so people are urged to get there early to ensure admittance.
