As CIM nears the end of its 50 North East Marketing Greats, they invite you to meet Helen Sturdy, Communications Manager at Stockton-based housing group, Thirteen.

The initiative aims to develop and retain marketing talent in the North East region.  Diane Earles, Network Manager for CIM, explains “‘Through the ‘Marketing Greats’ we want to provide insight into the importance of a strategic marketing function and to inspire both existing marketing professionals and young people considering a career in marketing.  Each ‘Marketing Great’ is profiled in an online case study which includes their words of wisdom for aspiring marketers alongside their career story and why they enjoy working in the region.”  She continued, “Developing our original ‘Great North East Brands’ initiative, which ran for a number of years, ‘Marketing Greats’ provides a regional platform for marketing to be recognised as having a key role in business growth while celebrating the number of senior marketers located in the North East.”

Like Helen Sturdy, who started on the journalism path doing a degree in English at Nottingham Trent University, a National Council for the Training of Journalists Certificate in Newspaper Journalism and a Chartered Institute of Public Relations Advanced Certificate.  She worked briefly at a news agency and as a journalist at the Gazette in Middlesbrough for six years before joining Thirteen in March 2005.   Helen explained, “I was attracted by the chance to work for a brand new organisation where I could really shape its communications and PR approach while developing my own skills.”  Her remit is to ensure the operational delivery of high quality and effective internal and external communications to help deliver Thirteen’s ambitions as a leading housing organisation.  She does this with the support of three communications and media officers and a communications assistant.
