GLOBE-TROTTERS are adding Newcastle to their travel plans after a city centre hotel unveiled the cheapest rates in the region.
The Albatross youth hostel, at Grainger Street, has long been a popular destination for back-packers keen to explore Tyneside and the wider region.
However, it is now attracting foreign exchange students, stag and hen parties and tourists from around the world thanks to a flat rate charge of just £16.50 per person per night.
The venue, named after the seabird whose giant wing span enables it to fly vast distances without landing, has 177 beds in dormitories for between two and 12 people and offers a wide range of facilities and amenities.
Along with free Wi-fi, bed linen and breakfast, guests can take advantage of a self-catering kitchen, a games room, Freeview TV, DVD and towel hire, a laundry room and an outside seating area.
And it is this added value that The Albatross’s owners, Newcastle-based Malhotra Group, believe sets it apart from its competitors.
“We are increasingly finding that students aren’t the only ones looking for good quality, clean, safe and affordable accommodation” said managing director Atul Malhotra.
“People of all ages, from just about every country in the world, are choosing The Albatross for its city centre location and because they know they won’t be faced with hidden charges.”
The Albatross, voted Best Youth Hostel in the UK by travel experts Hostel World, also puts an emphasis on safety with CCTV cameras, electronic room keys and an on-site, live-in management team.
“Youth hostelling has changed enormously in recent years,” said Atul. “Travellers of all ages have higher expectations when it comes to quality, facilities and value for money and it’s our job to meet them.”
