  • 4 miles of new safety barriers will be installed
  • 7,900 reflective studs to be installed

Whether you’re travelling from Darlington to Durham or Morpeth to Middleborough, drivers across the North East will benefit from a £40 million makeover of the region’s motorways and major A roads this year providing drivers with smoother and safer journeys, including over 100 miles of resurfacing.

Roads play a vital role in keeping the country moving and that is why we are delivering a record investment in maintenance. This work is in addition to carrying out major road improvement schemes across the region.

Highways England’s service delivery team leader for the North East, Hayden Green, said:

“Our roads connect cities, countryside and communities and we know that drivers care about the journeys they make. This investment will see 95 separate schemes taking place throughout the region and will improve the journeys for the hundreds of thousands of drivers who use our roads every day.

“We are always looking at ways we can improve things for our customers whether that be improved signage explaining what the work is or reducing the length of roadworks. We have challenged our teams to be as efficient as possible in planning and delivering the work.”

Over the next year Highways England will be resurfacing 107 lane miles, that’s the same distance as a return journey from Newcastle to Belford in Northumberland, and nearly 90 miles of new road markings will be renewed which is enough to lay a single white line between York and Seaton Burn along the A19.

The work also includes installing 7 miles of drainage, nearly 4 miles of safety barriers as well as renewing boundary fences and putting in nearly 7,900 reflective road studs.

Work is continuing on the barrier scheme on the A1(M) north of Darlington and work will start this month on the second stage of the A66 westbound resurfacing near Stockton.

Further details of specific schemes will be released closer to the start dates.
