ONE of the region’s best multi-cultural festivals is just around the corner – and stallholders can still get in on the action.
The Middlesbrough Mela takes place over the weekend of Saturday, July 9 and Sunday, July 10, with a first class line-up of music, food and entertainment.
Last year’s 25 th anniversary Mela attracted an audience of around 50,000 over the free two-day festival – organisers are hoping the 2016 event will set new records and they’re still taking bookings for stalls until this Wednesday (June 29).
Mela promises a heady mix of world class music, a wide range of entertainment, a family fairground and a popular bazaar, packed full of stalls.
Held every year since 1990, Middlesbrough Mela sees the town celebrate its culture and diversity through a wide range of music, entertainment, a funfair and a popular bazaar packed full of stalls.
Saturday’s Health and Well Being Mela from noon to 6pm features a huge range of activities including wheelchair basketball, boxing, rock climbing and fencing performances from local community groups including Teesside School of Music, Rhythm Train and Bellamy School of Dance.
Mela chairman Satnam Singh said: “With great support from Middlesbrough Council and our sponsors – especially Middlesbrough College – Mela 2016 will be a fantastic celebration of multicultural music, food, fashion and art.
“It’s one of the best celebrations of culture and diversity anywhere in the UK, and a true symbol of Middlesbrough’s community spirit.”
The event is organised by Middlesbrough Council in conjunction with a local community steering group, with backing from a range of sponsors including Middlesbrough College and the Police and Crime Commissioner.
Middlesbrough Mela takes place in Centre Square between the Town Hall and mima from noon to 6pm on Saturday, July 9, and noon to 7pm finale on Sunday, July 10.
