More than half a million plastic bottles have been recycled into carpet underlay used in Bellway’s homes in the North East.
The housebuilder, which is based in Gateshead, has used Designer Contracts SpringBond eco-engineered underlay – made up of 85 per cent PET plastic bottles and other single use plastics – at developments across the region. The underlay is made by Yorkshire-based textile manufacturer Texfelt.
And in celebration of this milestone, Bellway has been given a gold Eco Housebuilder 2022 Award, by their flooring contractor Designer Contacts which recognises the developer’s outstanding environmental achievement in successfully preventing over half a million plastic bottles from polluting the world’s oceans.
Barry Norton, Sales Manager for Designer Contracts, said “We are proud to support Bellway in giving their house buyers greener product choices. New home buyers are becoming increasingly aware of their impact on the environment and by using this underlay in an average sized three-bedroom house, approximately 1000 plastic bottles are diverted from the ocean.
“The North East division have really embraced this eco flooring option and driven their sales of Spring Bond and we were delighted to be able to present this award to them in recognition of their positive environmental impact”
Emma Chesterton, Sales Director at Bellway North East, said: “At Bellway we are committed to helping protect the natural world and building new homes in a more environmentally-friendly manner, so we are pleased to have been recognised as a gold level housebuilder by Texfelt.
“SpringBond eco-engineered underlay is a quality product which not only recycles plastics but also helps insulate the home and improves its energy efficiency, which benefits both homeowners and the planet.
“It is gratifying to know that the underlay we have used so far in our homes at Bellway North East had led directly to the recycling of more than half a million plastic bottles.
“As a socially responsible company, we are trying to work towards a net zero carbon future as part of our ‘Better with Bellway’ programme. To this end, we source eco-friendly products, seek out local materials wherever possible and employ local people at our sites. As further evidence of our green credentials, Bellway planted 17,200 tree saplings across our developments and diverted 99.4 per cent of our waste away from landfills in 2021.
“As part of this company strategy we are examining every aspect of the business, and this has led to our relationship with Designer Contracts and the use of SpringBond underlay in all of the new homes being built by Bellway North East.
“Our aim is to deliver much-needed new homes for the people in the North East and do to so in a way that benefits not only the local community but the planet as a whole.”
Bellway North East is currently building new homes at 16 developments across Northumberland and Tyne and Wear.
