Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Newcastle art gallery sketches out new spring show

An independent North East art gallery’s new exhibition is in full bloom this spring, with a flourishing mix of new art, craft and design work.

The Biscuit Factory, located in the Ouseburn Valley, launches its new spring exhibition on Friday 2 March, encompassing contemporary paintings, prints, sculpture, glass and ceramics from more than 250 artists and makers.

Cornish artist, John Brenton headlines the spring exhibition with a collection of specially created sea and landscape paintings that capture some of the North East region’s most cherished locations on canvas, including Bamburgh and Lindisfarne Castle.

Another highlight this season is June Berry, who has had a distinguished career in watercolours, oils and etchings. Showing an interest in people and their daily lives, Berry’s work has been included in collections of HM the Queen and also the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.

The gallery also welcomes Print & Press – an exciting exhibition that highlights and celebrates printmaking in all its diversity through the work of local printmaker and tutor, Carol Nunan, and her students, both past and present.

Visitors can also explore the gallery’s newly dedicated contemporary craft and design space on the ground floor, featuring a diverse range of functional homewares alongside sculptural pieces, which celebrate craft in its many forms.

Perfectly timed for the onset of spring, The Biscuit Factory is also hosting a botanical themed jewellery collection, spotlighting makers who take inspiration from the natural world. The collection includes more than 350 handmade pieces of jewellery and showcases a varied mix of styles, materials and techniques.

The new exhibition launches with a special free event on Friday 2 March, 6-9pm, featuring a range of exciting pop ups and artists demonstrations from local creatives, including Hexham Book festival, The Crafthood and florist, Wildlflower.

The spring exhibition runs until 20 May. The gallery is open seven days a week and admission is free. For more information, visit www.thebiscuitfactory.com.
