THE future governance of Billingham and Elton was considered at a full meeting of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council on Wednesday evening (20 January).
Councillors studied consultation feedback by stakeholders and local government electors from the two areas and debated the issues that were raised.
As a result, the Councillors agreed to support proposals to retain both Billingham Town Council and Elton Parish Council.
This was part of a Community Governance Review in response to Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council receiving a valid petition calling for the abolition of Billingham Town Council, and the fact that Elton Parish Council had not operated since December 2008.
Further consultations about the proposals began on Thursday 21 January and will continue until Wednesday 17 February 2016. The resulting responses will be reviewed at a meeting by Members of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s Cabinet on 17 March and at a meeting of the full Council on 27 April 2016.
The final recommendation and reasons for the decision will be published at the end of April 2016.
