Sage Gateshead offers an eclectic programme next week (week commencing 2 July) for music lovers of all tastes.

The Royal Northern Sinfonia and Nevill Holt Opera bring a new production of The Marriage of Figaro to Sage One on 4 and 6 July as part of the Great Exhibition of the North.

Classical music lovers can spend a free day with the Royal Northern Sinfonia, sampling key works from the last 400 years as part of an RNS Sampler in Sage One and Two on 7 July.

A showcase of the best of Northern Brass is staged on 8 July as part of the Great Exhibition of the North.

The Marriage of Figaro; Royal Northern Sinfonia and Nevill Holt Opera

Wednesday 4 and Friday 6 July, Sage One

This brand new and fully-staged production of Mozart’s most popular opera, conducted by Nicholas Chalmers and directed by Joe Austin, tells the intriguing and comic tale of Figaro’s attempts to stop his fiancée falling into the hands of his philandering master.

Royal Northern Sinfonia Sampler

Saturday 7 July, 2pm: Sample Baroque, Sage One; 3.30pm: Sample Classical, Sage One; 5.30pm, Sample Modern, Sage One; 6.45pm: Sample Romantic, Sage One; 8.15pm: Sample Chamber, Sage Two

Join the North-East’s international chamber orchestra on a fun and accessible guided tour of musical history to help the listener delve deeper into the classics. Five 45 minute concerts are held during the day, providing an opportunity to dip in and out or simply enjoy the full day’s experience.

Great Exhibition of the North

Great North Brass: Reg Vardy Band and friends

Sunday 8 July, 2pm – 5pm, Sage One

This showcase of the best in Northern Brass features the Reg Vardy Band, which has won more Regional Championships than any other band in the country. Other notable successes include becoming 2017 French Open Brass Band Champions and Doctor Martins Contest Champions for a fourth time.

Also appearing are the NAS/UWT Riverside Band which regularly appear at Durham International Brass Festival and Sage Gateshead and were 2017 North of England Champion band.

Easington Colliery Band, founded in 1915, still play in the old wages office on the colliery site – the last remaining colliery building still in use in the Durham Coalfield.

Soloist Joseph Cook, born into a musical family in County Durham, began playing tuba at the age of 12 and was a member of the National Youth Brass Band for four years. He was winner of the Harry Mortimer Solo Competition in 1997 and was twice a semi-finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year and Shell London Symphony Orchestra Scholarship. As a soloist, he has worked with many groups, including the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Black Dyke Band and has featured in the European Championships Gala Concert and National Brass Band Championships Gala Concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
