Hackney Colliery Band will be appearing at Sage Gateshead on Friday 28th July, following sell out performances in London and Edinburgh.
The band, named “one of the greatest live bands we have in this country” by BBC Radio 2, will be appearing in the Sage Two hall and is supported by Deja Brew DJs.
Hackney Colliery Band cite influences from the world of contemporary rock and electronica, as well as jazz and global brass. A New Orleans-style line up of trumpets, trombones, saxes, sousaphone and two drummers and a name which pays homage to the British brass heritage, demonstrate that the band is rooted in tradition, yet sound thoroughly modern.
The critically acclaimed musicians, who performed at the closing ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, have previously performed at the MOBO, Brit and Mercury awards, and have collaborated with artists including Madness and Amy Winehouse.
Tamsin Austin, Director of the Popular and Contemporary Music Programme at Sage Gateshead, said: “We are very excited to welcome Hackney Colliery Band plus Deja Brew DJs to Sage Two. The band’s contemporary brass style makes for an incredible party vibe and appeals to such a broad range of audiences of all ages and tastes, as can be seen in the many positive reviews in the national press.
“The North East has a rich heritage of colliery bands, and it’s brilliant to see musicians from other parts of the UK reimagining the genre in a completely unique way. It promises to be a lot of fun and we can’t wait!
