Rowton Castle, the magnificent 17th-century Grade II* listed castle, is one of Shrewsbury’s finest historic wedding venues. Offering a quintessentially British experience, Rowton Castle seamlessly combines the grandeur of a castle with the comfort and warmth of a country house. Nestled in the heart of Shropshire and set within 17 acres of tranquil grounds, the castle provides guests with breathtaking views of the picturesque English countryside. Both timeless and enchanting, Rowton Castle offers an unforgettable setting, luxurious accommodation, and an impeccable service.
Rowton Castle’s formal gardens were developed last year by garden designer Susan Dunstall, with the planting chosen to enhance Rowton Castle’s soft and romantic feel. David Austin roses were selected in whites and soft pinks, with a particular focus surrounding the outdoor wedding ceremony space, the Linden Belvedere. Fragrant planting was also a priority, with the sweet-scented roses complimented by the soothing notes of lavender. Groundsman, Steve Parke, worked closely with Susan to honour what would have ordinarily been found in the gardens of Rowton Castle. Contemporary concrete urns were replaced with topiaries and terracotta pots, whilst roses, lavender, hydrangeas, erigeron, and formal yew hedges were among the planting lists. Commenting on this project, Steve notes: “I have been with Rowton Castle for over 20 years and love being a part of the exceptional team here. It has been a privilege to work on these breathtaking gardens, blending innovative design with the rich traditions that make this place so special.”
In addition to the newly appointed formal gardens, Rowton Castle’s 17-acre plot also boasts a woodland walk, hidden pools, and a Victorian walled garden. The manicured formal gardens offer a beautiful backdrop for outdoor wedding celebrations, whilst the Victorian walled garden offers a serene and charming space, perfect for wedding couple photography. Filled with apple and pear trees, at certain times of year it is also possible to see the garden’s intricate quadrant pattern. Aside from the addition of the Linden Belvedere to the back of the property, and the grand driveway complete with a turning circle to the front, the layout of the grounds at Rowton Castle has scarcely changed within the last hundred years. Steeped in history, Rowton Castle truly offers its guests a glimpse into a bygone era.
Whilst primarily a wedding venue, on rare occasions Rowton Castle opens its doors for overnight stays. These exclusive opportunities provide a unique chance for guests to experience the castle’s charm. Whether it is a wedding or an overnight stay, guests will be welcomed by the warm and unparalleled service for which the Rowton Castle team is renowned. Offering a relaxed and peaceful escape, guests can take in the splendour of this extraordinary castle and its grounds, whilst feeling right at home.
