Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Senior Partner Tony Glenton looks to the future as he celebrates 50 years in practice

Ryecroft Glenton’s Senior Partner, Tony Glenton CBE TD FCA DL, one of the North East’s most prominent businessmen, is celebrating 50 years in practice as a Chartered Accountant.

Tony is the third generation of Glentons to practice in the City; his grandfather Arthur Glenton established Ryecroft Glenton with his cousin Wilton Ryecroft in 1901.

Tony joined the firm as a partner, two years after qualifying, in February 1967. In the 50 years since he has helped build Ryecroft Glenton into one of the leading independent practices in the North East.

Beyond his involvement with Ryecroft Glenton, Tony, a keen Territorial for over 30 years, was awarded the Military MBE in 1985 and commanded 101st (Northumbrian) Regiment, Royal Artillery (Volunteers). He went on to Chair the North of England Reserve Forces and Cadets Association and serve as Honorary Colonel of his Regiment.

He was a director and chairman of the Newcastle Building Society and the Port of Tyne Authority for several years.

In 2000 Tony was appointed CBE for his contribution to the region, his leadership of the Port of Tyne Authority and his contribution to the UK Ports industry.

He has served as Vice Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland and has been a Deputy Lieutenant of the County for 26 years during which time he has also chaired the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen Families Association (SSAFA) the Armed Forces Charity, in Northumberland. He chairs four other local charities and the Newcastle Cathedral Council.

In his capacity as senior partner at Ryecroft Glenton, Tony continues to act for a substantial number of clients and takes great interest in mentoring and supporting the firm’s growing number of younger partners which includes his son Peter, the fourth generation of Glentons, in practice.

Tony Glenton said: “Having become a partner at a fairly young age, I know how important the drive and commitment of younger colleagues is to a successful practice. Although the manner in which we now operate has been transformed by technology, what hasn’t changed in the past 50 years is our commitment to ensuring our clients receive a superb level of service, together with clear, up to the minute, advice to help them make important business and personal financial decisions with complete confidence.

The practice has thrived on the challenges of a changing world and by our doing the very best for our clients. We know that satisfied clients remain so for many years and generate valuable business by personal recommendation.”

Tony added, “I’m privileged and grateful to have had the enjoyment of practising for 50 years. In that time the firm has grown beyond all recognition, none of which could have been achieved without first-rate partners, excellent staff and the support of wonderful clients. I’m excited at the prospect of the years ahead and look forward to continuing my involvement with Ryecroft Glenton well into the future.”

Chris Robson, Managing Partner of Ryecroft Glenton, said: “Tony’s prominent position in the North East business community is a great asset to the firm, its clients, our staff and his fellow partners. He has championed our policy of being independent, growing our own people and promoting outstanding younger colleagues. Over its 114 year history the firm has remained at the forefront of financial professionals in the region by continually leading, adapting to the prevailing business environment and looking to enhance further our reputation in the market place.”
