North East Connected

Hopping Across The North East From Hub To Hub

Small businesses in the North East are being invited to access fully-funded courses to aid innovation and growth in national grid connection

ORE Catapult launches course as part of its Grid Connection Support Series – free support and advice to SMEs that offer grid connection products and services

As the need for  secure, reliable and clean electricity increases, Offshore Renewable Energy(ORE) Catapult, the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore wind, wave and tidal energy, is partnering with Narec Distributed Energy (DE) to provide SMEs in the North East (NE-LEP and Tees Valley LEP area) with a new fully-funded course – the G99 and G100: Grid Connection and Export Limitation Course.  Available free to SMEs as part of the Catapult’s Grid Connection Support series (GCSS), the next course will be run at the Narec DE Training Centre in Blyth, Northumberland on 4th and 5th September 2019.

Taking place over a day and a half, the course is suitable for contractors installing solar PV systems, wind turbines and any kind of energy storage system, for example batteries up to 50MW, and it covers the connection of large-scale embedded generators to the distribution network.

The first full day of the course is classroombased. It will include a lunchtime visit to the ORE Catapult Grid Emulation System, called eGrid. This is ORE Catapult’s electric power converter system capable of performing grid emulation for a wide range of electrical testing. The second day is a morning-only session working through individual projects that the delegates might require one-to-one help with.

The course will cover the following topics:

·       Introduction to the UK electrical power distribution system

·       Role of the District Network Operators (DNOs)

·       Network issues caused by embedded generation

·       Applicability of G99

·       Technical requirements of G99

·       Technical requirements of G100

·       Energy storage and associated issues

·       Connection application process

·       Witness testing requirements
