Exceptional work to support local people of all ages and abilities to access sport and physical activity has been celebrated at a number of awards events held across the county.
The awards, hosted by the Active Durham partnership, recognise the outstanding achievements of participants in all aspects of physical activity.
Athletes, coaches, teachers, officials and volunteers who develop and deliver sport and physical activity in schools, clubs and community settings throughout County Durham were honoured during the four locality events held in Durham and Chester-le-Street, Durham Dales, Sedgefield and East Durham and Derwentside.
Earlier this year, nominations were invited across 13 sport and physical activity categories, with 292 received in total.
The standard of nominations was extremely high and demonstrated the quality and diversity of sport and physical activity across the county, meaning the judging panel – consisting of representatives from a range of agencies spanning public and third sector organisations – had their work cut out to pick the winners.
Those who triumphed included individuals or groups that have made a significant difference in County Durham through demonstrating the positive impact sport and physical activity can have on people’s lives.
Some were recognised for a significant achievement in the past year while others have demonstrated commitment and dedication over a number of years. Winners also included those who had achieved a specific goal by leading an active lifestyle whilst facing personal barriers and challenges.
Winners were presented with their awards by former long jumper Chris Tomlinson, who represented England and Great Britain on over 50 occasions, including at three Olympic Games.
Chair of the Active Durham partnership, Annie Dolphin OBE, was delighted by the number and standard of nominations received.
“These events have provided an opportunity to recognise some amazing people and their organisations for their contributions to health and wellbeing, as well as the personal achievements of some extremely talented individuals” she said.
“Without the commitment and dedication of so many people, sporting and physical activity opportunities across our county would be far fewer and this was the partnership’s way of saying thank you for all that they do.”
All locality winners will go through to the County Sport & Physical Activity Awards on Friday, 26 January at the Gala Theatre in Durham City.
