Every household is legally required to respond to the form. It is quick and simple to confirm the details are correct and this can be done in a number of ways, including online, by using the security code provided on the form. Residents can also respond by text or via the freephone number.
Leader of Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Councillor Bob Cook, said: “It’s important that you’re registered in the right name and at the right address otherwise you could miss your chance to vote. Many people don’t realise that failure to register to vote also means you may be refused a bank account, loan, credit card or mortgage as being on the electoral roll acts as proof of address for many companies.”
It is also important that residents who have recently moved house update their details. Any young people who may have turned 16 recently should have their names added, as while they cannot vote until they are 18 they can be added to the register.
Every property in the Borough needs to return this form, even if there is no one in the household eligible to vote.
