A group of Richmond School students worked with local businesses to learn about future study opportunities and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The group of Year 9 and 10 girls participated in the STEM for Girls Workshop, in collaboration with North Yorkshire Business and Education Partnership (NYBEP). These workshops are part of NYBEP’s Women into STEM Initiative which aim to develop skill and inspire talent for tomorrow’s workforce.
The scheme supports employers in sharing good practice, resources and training to improve their confidence in engaging with female students to encourage their progression into STEM-based study and careers.
The students worked in teams to complete a practical activity, designing and creating hats, using transferable skills which are useful for STEM. They really enjoyed the practical activity with student Elizabeth McDonald exclaiming, “This is the best day of my life!”
In addition, they learnt about the different STEM jobs available and the current trends in STEM careers. The STEM ambassadors gave them real-life examples of their career paths, explaining what they do in their job roles and what led them to work in a STEM career.
Susan Thornton, STEM Co-ordinator, said :” The event was a great success and the girls really valued the advice from the ambassadors. They embraced the hands-on task, learning valuable and transferable skills. We are greatly appreciative to the STEM ambassadors who supported the event and extend our thanks to Sophie Hazell (The City Secret), Gillian Morley (Morley Colling Associates) and Hilary Bevan (Bevan VAT Consultancy Ltd).
