YOUNG PEOPLE from across Sunderland will be getting an insight into the world of work, thanks to some of the region’s leading professionals.
Work Discovery Sunderland, an initiative designed to forge stronger links between the city’s businesses and its students, will be holding a guest speaker day on October 9.
The day, which will be the first guest speaker event of the new term, will be held in the Sir Tom Cowie Lecture Theatre at the University of Sunderland and will give students the chance to hear from three leading businessmen.
Speakers at the event will be John Green, the Retail Liaison Manager at Bridges shopping centre, David Cook of ACA Financial Services and Richard Sice, the Director of specialist international marketing consultancy, Going Global Skills.
“The guest speaker days give students the opportunity to meet face to face with professionals from a range of industries who have all had different career paths,” said Paul McEldon, co-chair of Work Discovery Sunderland.
“It’s an excellent way for young people to hear directly about how business people have achieved their success which will hopefully inspire them in turn.”
The speakers will talk about their personal journeys from education to work, with the student attendees having to complete a quiz on what they’ve heard at the end of the session.
Work Discovery Sunderland, which was created by Sunderland’s Economic Leadership Board Business Schools Task Group, also runs Work Discovery Week every year, which helps students to develop their employability skills and get an insight into various industries before they embark on their careers.
