A limited number of places are on offer for a free guided tour up the 152 year-old clock tower on two dates: Saturday 21 and Thursday 26 May. The free tours will form part of the Love Your Local Market celebrations taking place in Darlington on Saturday 21 May from 9am-5pm.

Darlington will be joining more than 1,000 markets across the country. The day will feature regular and specialist market stalls, live music, Punch & Judy, balloon modeller, circus magician, face painter and family entertainment both inside the covered market and around the town centre

Councillor Nick Wallis, Darlington Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Local Environment and Transport, said: “Love your Local Market has been a popular campaign for a number of years and I am delighted to see our markets getting involved again.

“It is a brilliant chance to showcase what markets are all about and for local people to come along, enjoy the atmosphere and enjoy shopping in a unique place and even try their hand at winning a free tour up our famous clock tower.”

For a chance to win a free clock tower tour, shoppers will need to put their name, address and daytime contact number on a postcard or on the back of a sealed envelope and hand it into the news agents inside the Covered Market. Entrants will need to indicate which day and time they prefer.

There will be four tours on each day at 10am, 11am, 1pm and 2pm. Not suitable for people with fear of heights or people with mobility issues as there are 100 steps to climb; all children must be accompanied by an adult. Entries must be received by Monday 16 May; winners will be notified on Tuesday 17 May.

The Love Your Local Market campaign is led by the National Association of British Market Authorities, with full support from the wider markets industry and Government.
