The Last of Us TV series finale is scheduled for Sunday 12th March, which reminds us that although unlikely, we should always consider the possibility of a zombie apocalypse.
On the off chance that doomsday is around the corner, experts at RantCasino.com sought to investigate which areas of the UK would be most affected by a zombie apocalypse*. Estimations for this study are based on a sample of 369,240 globally geolocated cemeteries and memorials acquired from an established public database of cemetery records.
Key Findings:
- If you live in Leeds, you might not escape unharmed in a zombie apocalypse – with a whopping 811,422 potential zombies roaming the streets.
- Leeds is also home to 149 cemeteries, which we recommend avoiding!
- Manchester is the second unluckiest city in a zombie apocalypse, with 769,911 potential zombies.
- The luckiest place to live in during a zombie apocalypse is the Isles of Scilly, with only 98 potential zombies roaming the streets.
RESULTS
Rank | District | Cemeteries | Population | Area KM² | Total Zombies |

Leeds ranked as the WORST areas to live during a zombie apocalypse
With a whopping 811,422 potential zombies roaming the streets, Leeds is the unluckiest UK city to be in, should a zombie apocalypse occur. Leeds is also home to 149 cemeteries, which we recommend avoiding!
The second unluckiest city to live in during a zombie apocalypse is Manchester, with 769,911 potential zombies. Not good news if you’re a Mancunian!
In third place is Liverpool, with the potential to host 469,768 zombies during doomsday, followed by Bath & North East Somerset, with 297,409 potential zombies, in fourth place.
Southwark comes in fifth place (267,818 potential zombies), followed by Wigan (258,692 potential zombies), Sheffield (230,783 potential zombies) and Bolton (222,339 potential zombies).
There is a glimmer of hope for the cities in ninth and tenth place, which are Kensington and Chelsea (200,289 potential zombies) and Medway (185,377 potential zombies).
These would be the LEAST affected areas in a zombie apocalypse:
Residents in the Isles of Scilly might not notice there is a zombie apocalypse, with just 98 potential zombies roaming the streets during doomsday. The same can be said for Stevenage, the second least affected area, with only 241 potential zombies roaming the streets.
The third luckiest place to live during a zombie apocalypse is Oadby and Wigston (433 potential zombies), followed by Redditch (554 potential zombies) and Mansfield (685 potential zombies).

*Methodology:
- RantCasino.com conducted the following research to replicate a hypothetical zombie apocalypse in which the deceased are resurrected as the living dead. The research evaluates both the nominal and relative concentrations of zombies in administrative subdivisions of the United Kingdom. Estimations for this study are based on a sample of 369,240 globally geolocated cemeteries and memorials acquired from an established public database of cemetery records, Find a Grave (owned by Ancestry.com).
- Firstly, the sample of cemeteries is reverse geocoded using the Ordnance Survey Administrative Boundaries and the Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing (TIGER) boundary lines for the UK.
- Population estimates from the ONS, and the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Centre (SADAC) are used to define district and state-level populations for the UK. Population estimates from the SADAC were polygonised from raster images and spatially joined to the TIGER state-level boundaries.
- The geolocated dataset of cemeteries was then aggregated by district and state to determine the total number of cemeteries, total number of memorials, memorials per capita (%) and memorials per KM2 for each administrative subdivision to find the unluckiest places to live during a zombie apocalypse.
